HISTORY The school was founded by Mrs. Daphne Norcross in the 1960s. Peta Barratt joined the school as an Assistant Teacher in 1987 and bought the school in 1991 when Mrs. Norcross retired.
WHAT WE OFFER Ondine Academy offers training in R.A.D. ballet to the highest standard - up to and including Grade 8 – in Stoke Poges, Gerrards Cross & Chalfont St.Peter. I.S.T.D. Modern & Tap classes are also held in the above venues, however, it is a school policy that modern and tap are additional to ballet classes as ballet is the core subject.
Parents are welcome to watch classes in the first class after the half term of each term, with the exception of the Baby class, for which the watching week will be the last class of the term
The size of the school allows us to hold Ballet exams each term in our own venue, which means that the children may progress at their own pace and take an exam as soon as they are able and not have to wait until there are enough children ready to book an Examiner.
ISTD Modern & Tap is offered in all Grades & Majors and exams are held twice a year. We also hold an Adult Tap class.
Baby Ballet is offered from age 2 ½ - 3 ½.
Melody Movement * syllabus is taught from 3 ½ - 4 ½ where the children celebrate their achievements in class with special stickers on a Melody Bear chart and medals are awarded throughout the year. At 4 ½ the children then move up to the RAD Pre-Primary syllabus.

SHOWS, FESTIVALS, AUDITIONS The school has performed many shows to give the children some stage experience, to enjoy non-syllabus dancing and to have all the fun of wearing costumes and of performance. Ondine Academy has raised approximately £25,000 for children’s charities in their last 8 shows! The pupils and teachers are justifiably proud.
Groups are entered for Chesham and Watford Competitive Festivals and have had great success. Many children have auditioned successfully for the annual Aylesbury and Chesham pantomimes.
Our pupils have also been successful in auditions for the Royal Ballet’s Junior Associates, for Elmhurst Ballet School, for Arts Education at Tring and for the Teachers’ Training course at the Royal Academy of Dance. We offer work experience for our pupils who are keen to become Teachers.
QUALIFICATIONS The Royal Academy of Dance is an awarding body, approved by the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority, which has accredited the Academy’s Grade & Major exams. Passing Grades 1, 2, & 3 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade D – G or Level 1 NVQ. If the children continue through to pass their Grade 8, they will accomplish a result to the value of an A level! Many of our girls have achieved this.
TEACHERS The Principal, Miss Peta Barratt, went to Laine Theatre Arts, where she achieved her Teacher Training exams. She then taught for a year in Hong Kong and a year in Italy, before returning to England to join Mrs. Norcross in Stoke Poges. Miss Barratt then achieved her full R.A.D. Registered Teacher exams and her Licentiate at the I.S.T.D. As well as her own school - Ondine Academy - she has taught ballet to the girls at Maltmans Green School in Gerrards Cross since 1988. She lives in Chalfont St.Giles with her husband and twins.
